Despite global uncertainties we want our children to revel in the fact that they’re uniquely human and are blessed to live on this fabulous blue planet. Yes, there are challenges ahead, but our challenge is to teach them the beauty of being human - our inquisitiveness, faith, empathy, creativity, perseverance, teamwork, resiliency, visionary qualities and our extraordinary capacity to build relationships.

Teaching Values of Being Human is a rich and practical collection of guided conversations, sequenced lessons and activities for all kinds of educators; teachers, school support workers, parents and allied health professionals.

Teaching Values of Being Human draws on positive psychology, wellbeing, mindfulness, spirituality and growth mindset. It elevates them into real-world language and applied practices so educator and student, or parent and child, can understand, learn and apply together.

Teaching Values of Being Human advances how we educate the young people in our care. It is filled with ideas to empower student agency and voice so they can become campaigners for a better world.

Teaching Values of Being Human raises the status of clever, emotionally crafted classrooms and families. This is where young people are encouraged to engage with one another, to exchange ideas, compare thoughts, normalise feelings, find purpose, grow and build new understandings about the world. When we’re able to safeguard these precious environments, we give children opportunities to grow through past difficulties, to discover happiness, new identities and skill themselves with their uniquely capabilities they can take into the future.

Teaching Values of Being Human advocates that our young people are our greatest asset. They possess an incalculable richness and potential. Now is not who they will be, but what we do now and how we do it, will set the trajectory for what is to come.

Mark's bio

Mark Le Messurier is a teacher, counsellor, public speaker, and the author of 16 publications over past years.

He works in private practice at Wayville in South Australia as a mentor to young people, a coach to parents, and a teacher educator. He is often invited as a critical friend into schools who want to develop this deeper humane ethos. Mark regularly presents at conferences for universities, schools, for parent organisations, corporations, and interested groups throughout Australia and further afield.

He is the recipient of the prestigious Australia Day Council's 2022 Senior South Australian of the Year award. His generosity and consideration for others was recognised as profound, far reaching, life changing and lifesaving. He's helped many families, and has improved the self-worth, mental health, and life outcomes of children, adolescents, parents, and educators.

His passion is inspired by the hurt and confusion young people feel as they face unexpected, unfair, and unkind challenges in life. The books and programs he's written illustrate his wild drive to share his understandings about young human beings with their significant others, namely their parents and educators. Now it's our turn to be the adults. Whether we accept it or not we are holding the baton. And our children... well, they're just that... they are children, and they are relying on us. Their brains, bodies, and spirit are in the process of precious construction. The atoms which merged to make them who they are did so like never before, and will never do so again. There will never be another of them anywhere in the universe. We want them to rejoice in their humanness, and know they are so much more than enough. This is their birthright and our responsibility.

Mark lives in Adelaide, Australia, and is married to Sharon. They have two daughters, Kim and Noni. Plus, three beloved fawn parti-coloured whippets called Maxi, Luca and Kelvin. They are DELTA THERAPY DOGS and regularly visit Mark's rooms and an aged care centre.
